Schönberg, December 2010 – from the physics, you know the impressive impact, if only a single spark is sufficient to bring finely sprayed flour in a vessel to the explosion. Stephan Treml, product manager magnetic technology at S + S: “It pushes up the question of what devastating destruction causes a much and thousands more reaction in an industrial site.” Not only flour dust or flammable gases can cause explosions. Under certain circumstances, even products such as metal powder, sugar, herbs, wood chips and pharmaceutical react very strongly. “Even plastic powder, which is flammable is commonly not considered particularly light, gives 14 percent of the dust explosions according to the German non-life insurers.”
Since 01 July 2003 therefore equipment and protective systems must for use in potentially explosive atmospheres Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) meet. One of the most important changes of this directive was the separate assessment of risks, caused by mechanical ignition sources. Thus, no longer exclusively electrical sources caused by spark but also such as impact or friction sparks are taken into account. The non-life insurers were able to determine that 30 percent of the dust explosions in Germany of mechanical sparks are caused.
The company S + S separation and sorting Technology GmbH has already in 2005 the world’s first fully automated magnetic system delivered to the highest classification of ATEX zone 20 / 21. Since mid-2006, for potentially explosive atmospheres-use magnetic separators of a notified body all are type-tested.
Helmut Frisch, technical director at S + S, explains: “S + S is in the position for nearly every application in dust or gas explosion hazardous areas of magnetic separators to deliver.” We have the Know-How to take the equipment before the delivery of a conformity assessment according to the specifications of the ATEX product Directive 94/9/EC. “Many years of experience in many different applications, as well as the expert support of customers makes S + S within this sensitive scope a strong partner.”
